Northeastern Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association
Regional Communication Coordinator
NOFIA acts as the Regional Communication Coordinator (RCC) for the Northeastern Ontario (NEOSCIA) region of the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA). The Northeastern region is composed of the Algoma, Cochrane, Parry Sound, Muskoka, Manitoulin, Temiskaming, Sudbury, and Nipissing district Soil and Crop Improvement Associations.
This role involves compiling and sending out a quarterly newsletter, entitled Breaking Ground. Each edition of this newsletter is composed of a section of articles, updates, and information specific to agriculture in the Northeastern Ontario region as well as an update from the office of OSCIA which includes articles and information relevant to all Soil and Crop Improvement Association members across Ontario, and Crop Talk, OMAFRA's regular update on agricultural research.
Breaking Ground is sent out either electronically or physically to members of district Soil and Crop Improvement Associations. To join an Association and receive Breaking Ground, follow this link to the OSCIA website. The page will open in a new window.
Additionally, NOFIA supports events run by local Associations, such as crop tours and the Northern Ontario Ag Conference, as well as research projects. A current research project is the AgTiv Mycorrhizal Inoculant Trial on Potato and Cereal Crops. The purpose of this project is to test the efficacy of an inoculation intended to promote beneficial interactions between field crops and fungi.
